We show you how to easily make a papier mache volcano with the kids, that’s just perfect for a geography project, or a ‘Hawaiian Day’ at school.
Need a place to hide your most precious treasures from prying eyes? Is your little sister stealing your sweets? Or do you want to keep the secret messages from your friends in a safe place? Well, if you’ve got an old hardback book lying around, we’ve got two simple ways to make yourself the perfect hiding place.
What you will need
For serious crafters…
Glue all your book pages together. You can put a plastic bag around the cover of your book to protect it while you do this. You will then need to leave your book to dry completely. Unfortunately this may take a while.
Now this next step you will definitely need an adult to help you with. Cut a deep rectangle out of the middle of your pages with a scalpel. This will take some time as you need to cut through as may pages as possible – do it bit by bit. Once you’re done, coat the inside of the hole you’ve made with some more glue.
Time for decorating! Line the inside of your secret box with felt, or paint it in the colour of your choice. We chose to use glitter (because why not). Then you can fill it with goodies and hide in on a shelf where no one will find it!
The slightly easier version…
Take the hard cover off your book and discard the inside pages. Create a frame out of your cardboard, the same thickness as your book was when it was closes, and glue it to the inside back cover. Leave it to dry.
Paint the outside of the cardboard to look like pages. Or you can stick some plain paper to the outside. You could try out a few different ways to see what works best.
Then, just like the other version, line the inside with felt or paint in the colour of your choice. Fill your box with secrets and never feel spied on again
